Independence Day Celebrations

Please see the facebook event for details of the celebration of the 51st Anniversary of BOTSWANA INDEPENDENCE DAY on Saturday 30th September from 6pm-11pm at the Greenwich Carers Centre at The Stables, 76 Hornfair Road, Charlton, London SE7 7BD.

Earlier that day many Batswana including Botswana Community UK committee members joined in with march to the Botswana High Commission organised by the TV program Black and British A Forgotten History for the presentation of a plaque with the inscription:
“In 1895, chiefs Khama III, Sebele I & Bathoen I toured Britain to protect their homelands from colonisation. Their action led to the modern state of Botswana”.

The celebration for 2015 was at Mama Jumbe’s African Restaurant in East London (350 Katherine Road, E7 8NW) on Saturday 3rd October!  Please see a report of the 49th year of independence here.  The video presentation was hosted by Katrinah Phenyo.

In 2014 it was a fashion show at Arista Bar in West London!  We celebrated Botswana’s 48th year of independence with much gusto! You can see some pictures from the event on our Botswana Community Page.

In 2013 it was a fashion show!  We celebrated Botswana’s 47th year of independence at Mama Jumbe’s African Restaurant in East London (350 Katherine Road, E7 8NW) on 5th October!  We provided some of Botswana’s traditional dishes and enjoyed music by Lorraine Lionheart ( and other Batswana artists.  DJ Twinzz Molebatsi was playing Botswana music!  World of Beauty ran a fashion show of Touch of Africa Fashion with designs by Sela.  See more details at the facebook event here . . .

In 2012 it was an amazing party at The Colosseum to celebrate the 46th year of independence! See the pictures here & there.
